May 12, 2013

Hello Everybody.

I'm kind of excited. A good friend has gone and done something BIG.
He has created a GIANT music festival.
BottleRock in the Napa Valley. May 8-12.

The lineup is incredible.

This is where I will be this Mother's Day Sunday.
Church on Sunday with Mavis Staples. Can I hear an AMEN?
:)

I am featuring ALL BottleRock artists for this Sunday's playlist. Seems fitting.
Found some GREAT songs to try out and a few old favs.

Gathering: I'll Take You There by Al Bell
Sung by Mavis Staples

Opening: Rock Me On the Water by Jackson Browne

Gospel: House of Gold by Hank Williams
Sung by The Secret Sisters

Offertory: Walking Far From Home by Samuel Bean (Iron and Wine)
We've done this one at Grace. Powerful with the right singer.

Communion: Down In the Valley by Erin O'Hara
Erin is beloved member of our Island community. She's a beauty.
This song is great. Google it--I couldn't get the link to work here.

After Communion: Head Full of Doubt by The Avett Brothers

Closer: Starry Crown by The Caroline Chocolate Drops

Bonus Track:
Same Love by Seattle's pride and joy Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
SO excited to see these guys!

Hello Everybody!

Easter V

Acts 11:1-18Psalm 148Revelation 21:1-6John 13:31-35

Thinking about love.

I think everybody who knows me would be surprised, to say the least, to hear me quoting scripture.
Just not my style.

Here goes--I think it's a good one.

"Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

Here are some of our tried and true love songs. What are yours?

One Love

Love Enough

True Colors

One

All You Need Is Love

Put a Little Love In Your Heart

Orange Sky

Also thinking about the "new heaven" and this song by Brett Dennen is perfect.

Here is an excerpt from Psalm 148 from Psalms In Ordinary Voices

The earth and the sky are made of praise
Praise to the Great and Unfathomable Mystery--
Praise falling down from the tops of the mountains
Praise pouring out from the skies,
The Angels, the Sun and the Moon and the Stars of light--
Sing praise, prasie to the unending Mystery.

PS

After the news of this week--so much news--I've one more love song that made me cry tears of joy. A member of our Grace congregation, Florrie Munat, just happened to see a post of this video I shared on Facebook and offered to drop by the sheet music as she had it at home. Florrie has fond memories of hearing it sung in New Zealand and offered that at almost every Maori cultural event this song is sung!

Wow, what a world this would be if we sang a LOVE song at every baseball game, civic function and school event! IMAGINE!

We will play this instrumentally (our Maori is not up to speed!!) during communion. It is simply beautiful.

"Dear Heart of mine, I'll wait for thee,
My love is thine alone, to eternity."

Hello Everybody,

We are rolling right along.

Easter IV

Acts 9:36-43
Psalm 23
Revelation 7:9-17
John 10:22-30

23rd Psalm and Resurrection

I had a wonderful experience talking with the preacher/celebrant on for this week at Grace--Mary Petty Anderson. Mary is a WONDERFUL preacher. I think storytelling is in her bones. Can't wait to work with her on this service.

RESURRECTION SONGS:

So many good ones.

Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising"

We've used this one before during an Easter Vigil several years ago. So simple and powerful.

Of course Rise by Eddie Vedder works again here.

As I Rise by The Decemberists would be really great. And a good opportunity here to write some new lyrics. Sweet simple song.

This version here by Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Lord have mercy.

We've done this one as a solo--by our own Garth Edwards. His voice is a great mix of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen and he plays a sweet guitar. Really good.

I think I've posted this one already, but we can never get enough Tom Jones.
:)

Psalm 23

Bobby McFerrin's The Lord Is My Shepherd. A favorite.

Back in the day...with Keith Richards and Ziggy Marley.

Another one of my favorites--The Prayer Cycle by Jonathan Elias
It was given to me by my boss a million years ago. This reminds me I need to buy a digital version.
SO beautiful.
Here's a link to many of the selections on youtube.
Forgiveness is the 23rd Psalm
We've never pulled off any of these on a Sunday morning...some day!
